About Silver Springs
Silver Springs became popular after the civil war. The Silver Springs attraction began in late eighteen seventies, and was the first tourist attraction in Florida. The state took over the Silver Springs attraction in October of 2013 and have made major improvements. The state combined the attraction area to the existing Silver River State park, and now the Silver Springs State Park is over 5,000. beautiful acers.
In 1971 the Silver River and the park was designated a natural national landmark. Although the Silver Springs attraction did not open until 1878, the park was a very popular area, with steamboats delivering visitors from all over the nation to it’s crystal clear, pristine waters. Silver Springs became famous for it’s glass bottom boats, which was the brain storm of Hullam Jones and Phillip Morrell, a couple of young boys that affixed a pane of glass to the bottom of a row boat in 1878 and started charging people a nickel for rides. The boys were supposedly only 14 years old at the time.
Silver Springs most popular time was in the 1960s, when as many as 5,000. people were visiting daily during the week and 6,000.-7,000. on the weekends. In the 1930,s Colonel Tooey who operated the Jungle Cruise boat ride, released a troop of six rhesus monkeys in the park on cypress Island as a part of his jungle cruise. The colonel was going to name the Island…Monkey Island. What the colonel did not know is that the monkeys where excellent swimmers and eventually swam away. The monkeys are living wild now along the shores of the river and throughout the park.
There were several movies filmed in Silver Springs, including, Seven Swans in 1916, Tarzan in the 1930,s & 40,s Creature from the Black Lagoon in 1954 and many more. Television program such as Sea Hunt, Staring Lloyd Bridges, and I Spy starring Bill Cosby were also filmed here.
Today, Silver Springs remains very active with several food connections, a museum, musical concerts, and special weekend activities, such as the Spring fest. There are campsites available as well as bicycling , equestrian trails and hiking trails.
Silver Springs is a true Florida treasure that we hope is maintained and protected for generations to come.
Plan you visit and enjoy Florida at its best!
